The Core Rules
1. One queen per row, column, and region
The board is divided into irregularly-shaped color regions. Every row, every column, and every region must contain exactly one ♛ — no more, no fewer.
2. No two queens can touch
Not even diagonally. Every ♛ rules out all 8 cells directly around it — that's the rule that makes Queens harder than plain N-Queens, and the reason two queens can sit in the same row-distance apart everywhere except right next to each other.
3. Tap to mark, tap again to place
Tap once to mark a cell with ✕ — a place you've deduced a queen can't go. Tap again to place ♛, and a third tap clears the cell. Placing a queen automatically marks every cell it rules out, so the board keeps track of your deductions for you.
Controls: Mouse or Touch
You can play Queens with a mouse, trackpad, or touchscreen — the controls work the same way either way.
Mark, place, and clear
Click (or tap) a cell to cycle through empty → ✕ → ♛ → empty. Right-click (or long-press) a cell to clear it instantly, skipping the cycle.
Undo a mistake
The Undo button removes one step at a time — including a right-click clear. Clear Board wipes the whole board in one step, and that too can be undone in a single click if you clear by accident.
Tips to Solve Faster
Start with the smallest regions
A region with only 2–3 cells leaves very few valid spots for its queen — often just one once you factor in the row/column rule. Spot those early.
Use ✕ to eliminate
Mark every cell you've ruled out as you go. A fully-marked row, column, or region with only one open cell left tells you exactly where the queen has to go.
Watch adjacent rows
Once a queen is placed, the cell directly below-left, below, and below-right of it are all ruled out in the very next row — that constraint chains forward as you fill in more rows.
Work outward from certainties
Whenever placing a queen would leave some other region with zero valid cells left, that placement is wrong — use that to rule out options rather than guessing.
Common Mistakes
- Placing a queen without checking all 8 surrounding cells for another queen already there — diagonal touches are easy to miss.
- Forgetting that a color region needs its own queen too, not just each row and column.
- Marking ✕ on the only remaining valid cell in a region by mistake, boxing yourself out of a solution entirely.

Why I Built This
I've always liked puzzles with exactly one correct answer, solvable by logic alone — no luck, no clock forcing your hand. When LinkedIn's daily Queens puzzle brought that feeling to a huge new audience, I wanted more of it than one puzzle a day. So I built this: a free, no-signup version with a fresh daily puzzle, unlimited practice at any board size, and a full archive to catch up on any day you missed.
What Queens Really Is: Star Battle Meets the N-Queens Problem
Queens isn't a new invention. It's a rebrand of a classic pencil-and-paper puzzle called Star Battle, redesigned for LinkedIn by puzzle-making champion Thomas Snyder — who kept Star Battle's own one-per-region logic, but paired it with the name and row/column rule of a much older math problem, the N-Queens Problem.
Star Battle divides its grid into bordered regions, and asks every row, column, and region to hold the same fixed number of stars — usually two — with no two stars ever touching, not even diagonally. Snyder's redesign renamed the stars to crowns, fixed the count to exactly one per row, column, and region (Star Battle's own "1-star" variant), and swapped its thick black region outlines for the colored blocks Queens uses today.
The name comes from somewhere else entirely: the N-Queens Problem, first posed as the eight queens puzzle in 1848 by chess player Max Bezzel. It asks you to place N queens on an N×N chessboard so that no two share a row, a column, or a diagonal — the same way a queen attacks in chess.
That's also where Queens breaks from chess tradition. Classical N-Queens forbids any two queens from ever sharing a diagonal, no matter how far apart they sit. Star Battle has no such rule — its only constraint is that neighbors can't touch. LinkedIn's Queens inherits Star Battle's version of that rule, not chess's: two queens can share a diagonal freely as long as they aren't sitting right next to each other, which is exactly why the colored regions — not diagonal math — end up being what actually solves each board.
Where Queens Comes From
The eight queens puzzle has been keeping mathematicians occupied since Bezzel's 1848 publication in a German chess magazine; Carl Friedrich Gauss and others corresponded about it soon after, and it became one of the earliest problems used to teach backtracking — trying a placement, hitting a dead end, and undoing the last choice — a technique still central to how computers solve constraint puzzles today. Generalized to an N×N board, N-Queens has stayed a standard exercise in computer science courses ever since, precisely because the number of possible arrangements explodes so quickly that brute force alone doesn't scale.
Star Battle carries its own decades-long history in the pencil-and-paper puzzle world, prized by constructors for how far pure elimination logic can carry a solver without ever needing a guess. Queens sits at the intersection of both traditions — a puzzle format anyone can pick up in seconds, built on rules two very different communities spent generations refining.
